Alone on an island of warriors, Luffy learns that his brother has a week to live.
Kuma’s paw carries Luffy to Amazon Lily, an island in the Calm Belt where no man has set foot for centuries. Its warriors, the Kuja, use Haki as naturally as breathing and treat a male intruder as either a curiosity or a threat. The empress Boa Hancock, a Warlord whose beauty turns onlookers to stone, rules the island alongside her sisters Sandersonia and Marigold, and she regards Luffy’s presence as a violation that must end publicly.
The arc is small in scale but changes the shape of the story. In the arena Luffy stumbles on the secret the sisters have hidden beneath the legend of the Gorgon’s eyes, and his instinctive decision to protect it wins Hancock’s devotion. Through her, Luffy hears that Ace is imprisoned in Impel Down and will be executed within days. The captain who has been searching for a way back to his crew chooses instead to sail alone toward the most secure prison in the world.
Story
A stranger in the Kuja jungle Ch. 514–515
Luffy wakes in a jungle with a poisonous mushroom growing out of his body and no idea what sea he is in. A scouting party of Kuja warriors finds him, and Marguerite, Sweet Pea, and Aphelandra treat him with a mixture of medical thoroughness and anthropological confusion, since none of them has seen a man before. The discovery of what his body is made of, and what is attached to it, produces an uproar the story plays entirely straight. Their arrows carry Haki and never miss; Luffy, still half poisoned, decides that the sensible response is to run.
He runs the wrong way, into the village, and learns that Amazon Lily is a country: streets, markets, a palace, and a population that has never had a reason to lock a door against a stranger. Marguerite, who feels responsible for him, shelters him instead of reporting him, and the women who helped her follow her lead. Luffy eats, breaks things, and asks for a boat back to Sabaody as though one might simply be lent to him. Outside the harbor a Marine warship waits with orders for the island’s empress, and the empress is on her way home.
Boa Hancock comes home Ch. 516–517
The Kuja pirate ship returns with Boa Hancock aboard, a Warlord who has just refused the Government’s summons to Marineford by turning the officers who delivered it into statues. Vice Admiral Momonga, still waiting offshore, gives her until morning to reconsider. The island greets her as a goddess. She is beautiful enough to make the people who love her forgive anything, and she knows it; when she kicks a kitten and an old woman in the same afternoon, the crowd apologizes to her.
Luffy, chased through the palace, hides in the one room he should not enter. In the empress’s bath he sees a mark low on Hancock’s back that she has covered for her entire adult life, and her reaction is not embarrassment but terror. Anyone who has seen the mark must die, not for modesty but because of what the symbol would tell her people. Luffy is seized and sentenced to a public death in the arena, and Marguerite and the women who sheltered him are turned to stone for hiding him.
The Gorgon sisters Ch. 518–520
Hancock’s power turns anyone who desires her into stone, and it fails on Luffy for a reason she cannot process: he is not thinking about her at all. Furious, she hands the execution to her sisters. Sandersonia’s snake form and Marigold’s fire are guided by Haki that lets them read his movements before he makes them, and the arena has been built so that a prisoner cannot leave it. Luffy fights with Marguerite’s restoration as his only demand, and for most of the bout he is outclassed by two women who have been trained since childhood to do exactly this.
Luffy’s Gear Second finally puts Sandersonia on the ground, and Marigold’s fire, meant for him, catches her sister’s hair and begins to burn the cloth from her back. Luffy sees what is about to be exposed and covers it with his own body instead of pressing the advantage. He recognizes the brand from the auction house and knows what it would mean for a crowd to see it. Hancock stops the fight. The crowd believes the Gorgon’s eyes on the sisters’ backs have been spared from view; the sisters know that a man they meant to kill has just protected them.
What the Gorgon legend hides Ch. 521
In the palace, Hancock tells Luffy what nobody on the island knows. The three sisters were taken from Amazon Lily as children and sold to the Celestial Dragons, who branded them with the hoof of the soaring dragon and fed them Devil Fruits for entertainment. They were slaves in Mary Geoise for years, and the legend of the Gorgon exists to explain their powers and the marks so that no Kuja will ever learn what was done to her empress.
A fish-man named Fisher Tiger climbed the Red Line and set the slaves of the holy land free, without asking who or what they were, and the old woman the sisters call Nyon smuggled them home. Hancock has hated men since, and the island has been her armor. Luffy, hearing all of this, says only that he hates the Celestial Dragons too, and means it in a way she has never heard from anyone who was not enslaved by them. She releases Marguerite and the others from stone and finds she cannot look at him without her face changing.
Ace has days left Ch. 522–524
Luffy asks only for a ship back to Sabaody, and Hancock, unable to explain her own reaction to the first man who has protected her secret without demanding anything, finds herself trying to grant it. Then the scrap of paper Ace gave him begins to shrink and blacken. Nyon explains what the Vivre Card means and what the newspaper has been saying: Portgas D. Ace is held in Impel Down and will be executed publicly at Marineford in a week. The Government has ordered every Warlord to attend, which is why Momonga is still anchored outside the harbor.
Luffy abandons the plan to rejoin his crew. Impel Down lies on the way to Marineford, and a Marine ship is the only vessel that can cross the Calm Belt to reach it. Hancock accepts the summons she had refused and smuggles Luffy aboard concealed beneath her cloak, knowing that discovery would end her position and possibly her island’s freedom. The arc closes with a captain who has lost his crew choosing a rescue with almost no chance of success, because he cannot imagine doing anything else.
Legacy
Hancock’s allegiance turns a hostile Warlord into Luffy’s most powerful ally in the war to come, and Amazon Lily becomes the refuge where he recovers afterward. The brand on the sisters’ backs ties the auction house on Sabaody to the deepest resentments the story will excavate at Fish-Man Island.
By choosing Ace over the crew, Luffy sets the course for the rest of the saga. The rescue at Impel Down and the war at Marineford follow directly from a decision made here, in a hut on an island no man is supposed to have seen.
