Drum Island arc

Ch. 130–154 · Alabasta

To save their navigator, the crew enters a winter kingdom that has driven its doctors away.

Nami’s fever makes the voyage to Alabasta impossible without medical help. Vivi, whose country urgently needs her, insists on the detour and teaches Luffy how to ask strangers for assistance without turning every refusal into a fight. Drum Island’s distrust is understandable: its ruler Wapol monopolized medical care, then fled when pirates attacked, taking most of the doctors with him.

The doctor who remains lives above the kingdom on a mountain. Reaching Kureha means carrying sick and injured friends up an almost vertical winter cliff. At the summit, Luffy meets Chopper, a reindeer whose human abilities have brought rejection from both species. The island’s political illness and Chopper’s private loneliness meet in Hiriluk’s belief that a country, like a person, can be healed.

Story

A navigator goes down Ch. 130–131

Nami’s fever climbs past forty degrees and she keeps working, insisting the crew reach Alabasta on schedule. Vivi finally takes the decision away from her: a doctor comes first. The rest of the crew, who have never had one aboard, only now realise how careless that has been. Luffy asks the sea for a doctor and the sea sends a ship instead.

It is a warship with a metal hull, commanded by a king with a jaw like a bear trap. Wapol eats part of the Merry’s railing, demands to know whether they have seen a ship carrying his country, and reaches for Luffy’s flag. Luffy punches him off his own deck into the sea. His men, Chess and Kuromarimo, pull him out, and the Merry leaves them behind and follows a fisherman’s directions toward a winter island.

A kingdom that ran off its doctors Ch. 132–135

Drum Island’s coast is patrolled by men with rifles who fire on the ship. Vivi takes a bullet to the arm rather than let Luffy retaliate; then she kneels in the snow and begs the villagers for a doctor, and Luffy bows beside her. The giant who commands the guards, Dalton, lowers his weapon. He apologises for a country that pirates recently emptied and explains that its only doctor lives on the mountain.

Dalton tells the story over hot food in the village of Bighorn: King Wapol hoarded the kingdom’s twenty doctors as a tool of rule, then fled when a pirate crew attacked, taking them with him. Only a hundred-and-thirty-nine-year-old witch called Kureha remains, living in the abandoned castle on the highest of the Drum Rockies and coming down to treat patients only when she chooses. Then a soldier bursts in: Wapol’s ship has come home.

Luffy carries his friends up the mountain Ch. 136–139

While Dalton faces the returning king in the snow, Luffy sets off for the mountain with Nami on his back and Sanji at his side. Snow rabbits the size of bears follow them, and when Sanji shouts to warn Luffy, the animals trigger an avalanche. Sanji throws himself over Nami to shield her and is buried under the snowfield with his back broken.

Luffy pulls them both from the snow. He cannot use his hands to climb and hold his friends at the same time, so he grips Sanji’s coat in his teeth, ties Nami to his back and drives his bare fingers into the frozen face of the Drum Rockies. Hours later, his fingers raw and his body giving out, he reaches the flat summit and the frost-covered castle. A reindeer in a top hat, with a blue nose, catches him as he falls.

A castle with a witch and a nervous reindeer Ch. 140–141

Kureha, thin, ancient and drinking plum wine, diagnoses Nami with a tick-borne fever that would have killed her within days and orders three days of rest. Nami argues for two. Luffy and Sanji wake to find a reindeer that walks upright and speaks, and they chase him through the castle halls with equal parts appetite and delight while Chopper flees, hides badly, and hides again.

Kureha tells Nami where the reindeer came from. He was born with a blue nose and driven from his herd; then he ate a Devil Fruit that gave him a human’s shape and voice, and the humans he approached shot at him. One man took him in. Below the mountain, Dalton confronts Wapol in front of the villagers and is buried in an avalanche as the king’s party heads for the castle.

The doctor who treated a lonely heart Ch. 141–145

Hiriluk is a quack. He believes every disease can be cured and cures almost none of them, blowing up patients’ furniture with his medicines and getting chased from village to village. He finds the wounded reindeer in the snow and takes him in, naming him Tony Tony Chopper. For a year the two live in a hut on the mountain and the doctor tells the boy that there is no such thing as an incurable disease.

Hiriluk is dying and knows it. He throws Chopper out to spare him, and Chopper, learning the truth, climbs the winter mountain to find the one mushroom whose picture in a medical book has a skull beside it. He brings it back as a cure. Hiriluk eats the poison soup, thanks him, and goes to answer a summons from the king, who claims the country’s doctors have fallen ill. It is a trap.

In the castle, Hiriluk stands before Wapol and his court and explains that a man dies only when he is forgotten. Then he drinks a bottle of his own explosive medicine. Chopper, watching from outside, spends the following years with Kureha learning real medicine so that Hiriluk’s belief will one day be true: that this cold country, sick as a person is sick, can be healed. On the castle roof he flies the doctor’s own flag.

The flag at the top of the castle Ch. 146–151

Wapol, Chess and Kuromarimo arrive at the summit to reclaim their castle. Luffy meets them at the gate. Wapol climbs to the roof and fires a cannon at the skull-and-cherry-blossom flag flying there, and something in Luffy goes quiet. He seizes the pole, plants it on the tower, and refuses to let the king touch it, because a flag is a promise made by someone who meant it.

Chopper eats a Rumble Ball and fights Chess and Kuromarimo with transformations none of them expected: horns, arms, a brain that thinks in tactics. Wapol swallows his own retainers and spits out a combined soldier, Chessmarimo, and Chopper breaks it apart. On the tower Wapol tries to fire a cannon he has eaten. Luffy sends him spinning into the sky with a punch that carries him out of the country altogether.

Cherry blossoms in a winter sky Ch. 152–154

With the king gone, Dalton is dug out alive and the kingdom prepares to choose him as its leader. Luffy asks Chopper to come to sea. Chopper refuses: he is a monster, a reindeer with a human’s voice, and no crew wants that. Luffy answers with the only argument he owns, shouted across the courtyard until the reindeer cries.

Kureha chases Chopper down the mountain with a fistful of weapons, the only way she knows to say goodbye. As the sled reaches the foot of the Rockies she fires Hiriluk’s last experiment into the sky: a powder that turns the snow pink and falls over the kingdom like cherry blossoms. Chopper looks back once at the mountain his doctor loved, then turns toward the ship. The Merry sails south with a doctor aboard.

Battles

  • Luffy versus Wapol (Ch. 146–151): Luffy’s punch launches Wapol into the sky and out of Drum’s history. Dalton inherits a country without a king.
  • Chopper versus Chess and Kuromarimo (Ch. 147–150): Chopper breaks Chessmarimo’s weapons with a horn attack and drops him with a hoof to the jaw. Kureha, watching, says nothing.

Cast

  • Monkey D. Luffy: Climbs a frozen cliff with Nami on his back and Sanji in his teeth, then guards a dead man’s flag from a king with a cannon.
  • Nami: Burning with fever, she is the reason for the detour. Bargains a three-day rest down to two and hears Chopper’s story from Kureha.
  • Sanji: Shields Nami from an avalanche and breaks his back doing it. Spends the arc under orders not to move, and disobeys them.
  • Tony Tony Chopper: A blue-nosed reindeer who ate a Devil Fruit and became a doctor. Fights for his mentor’s flag and, after much shouting, sails.
  • Roronoa Zoro: Stays with the ship at the coast, goes swimming in a frozen sea, and gets lost in the snow.
  • Usopp: Guards the Merry with Zoro and Karoo on the coast, and helps dig Dalton out of the avalanche.
  • Nefertari Vivi: Puts Nami’s life ahead of her country’s schedule, takes a bullet rather than let Luffy start a fight, and teaches him to bow.
  • Wapol: Drum’s exiled king, who eats anything and hoarded the country’s doctors. Returns to reclaim his castle and fires on Hiriluk’s flag.
  • Chess: Wapol’s archer and chief of staff, jester’s hat and all. Fused with his partner into Chessmarimo.
  • Kuromarimo: Wapol’s bruiser, who fights by throwing clinging clumps of his own hair. Swallowed and reshaped by his king.
  • Dalton: Once Wapol’s captain of the guard, now the villagers’ protector. A bison zoan who stands against the king and is buried for it.
  • Dr. Kureha: A hundred-and-thirty-nine-year-old witch of a doctor who lives in the empty castle. Saves Nami, raised Chopper, and says goodbye with pink snow.
  • Dr. Hiriluk: The quack who took in a rejected reindeer and believed no disease is incurable, including a country’s. Dies on his own terms.

Places

Legacy

The crew gains the medical skill that its first Grand Line emergency exposed as missing.

Hiriluk’s distinction between death and being forgotten becomes a recurring lens for inherited dreams, while the mention of Blackbeard places another future force just outside the immediate story.
